## Some Example CFD Applications

Whether the CFD applications you are considering are simple or insanely complex, sometimes it helps to see how CFD has been used by others. To this end, here is a set of sample applications drawn from various projects I have been involved in over the years.

These cases are primarily aerospace-oriented, since that is where most of my experience has been, but they do cover a wide variety of flow configurations, speed regimes, and illustrate some of the many different types of data that can be derived from numerical simulations.

(Note that I have been involved in a lot more work than this, but much of it was proprietary, so I can't show any of the results here.)

Click on each link to see a brief discussion of each case which describes the objectives of the work, the CFD techniques used, and then presents a small sample of the results.

This first application was part of a project to develop a novel actuator to be used for active flow control systems. Check out this
simulation of a powered resonance tube.

This next example is a
3D cfd analysis of low speed turbulence
that I did some time ago. The geometry is trivial, but the physics of the flow is not.

Choosing the appropriate turbulence model for a simulation can make a big difference in the results, as shown by
this fluid dynamics analysis of a spatially evolving mixing layer
that I did some time ago. For a change, I've included a bit more technical detail in this example than the others.
Let me know if you think it's too much, or if I should beef up the others.

This next case is also focused on turbulence modeling, but this time using steady-state models. In
this transonic airfoil case
, I do an apples-to-apples comparison of the results using every RANS turbulence model available in the Wind-US flow solver.

This next set of CFD applications looks at the sensitivity of a simulation of turbulent reacting flow to various factors. The first page looks at
the effect of changing turbulence model on a reacting flow simulation.
Next, we examine
the impact of different chemistry options
on a reacting flow simulation. The last page (on this topic) discusses
some of the other issues that will affect a turbulent combustion simulation.
